Past Daniel Escobar Scholarship Recipients
2023 Awardee
Fabian Cook Jr., originally from Hinesville, GA, is a graduate of Morehouse College, where he majored in Economics. He began his professional career as a stockbroker at Morgan Stanley, but it was during his time at the firm that he rekindled his passion for acting by taking night classes.
In 2015, Fabian moved to Los Angeles, where he performed Shakespeare with Theatricum Botanicum and became a member of Actors' Equity.
After a three-year hiatus, he was introduced to voiceover through CEO and Master Sensei at the V.O. Dojo, Tish Hicks. As an awardee of the Daniel Escobar Scholarship, he completed the program and signed with three agencies. Fabian was later selected for the Penguin Random House Narrator Mentor Scholarship Program, where he is being mentored by Karen Dziekonski.
Since starting his journey with the Dojo, Fabian has narrated eight audiobooks and is loving every minute of it.
2024 Awardee
Frank Marshall is a husband, father, grandfather, and U.S. Navy veteran. After his service, he spent 20 years as a fine dining waiter. He often jokes that, while he has no formal performing experience, he did 15 shows a night, five days a week, for two decades.
After developing a debilitating heart condition that left him unable to work, Frank discovered the world of voice over. He has been pursuing it ever since with the support and guidance of the The V.O. Dojo.
2025 Awardee
Maria Amelia Park is a US/UK dual citizen and a proud mixed-race, LGBTQ+ military brat whose love for comics and animated TV sparked a lifelong passion for storytelling. With degrees in both theatre and film, she’s spent over two decades voicing anime, video games, audio dramas, and more.
In 2008, her life took a series of impossibly difficult turns and she had to pause her career to care for multiple family members through serious illnesses. Unfortunately, she lost three loved ones during this excruciating time.
After years devoted to caring for her loved ones through profound loss, Maria eventually relocated to Dallas, where she’s now focused on rebuilding her voiceover career while managing chronic illness—grateful for the support of The VO Dojo and the opportunity provided by the Daniel Escobar scholarship.
"Voiceover is not easy, but it doesn't have to be hard either!"

About Your Host
Tish Hicks
and
The V.O. Dojo
Tish Hicks is an accomplished, successful LA voiceover artist and the creator, CEO, and Master Sensei of the V.O. Dojo, a holistic, full-training program that guides, supports, connects, and accelerates voiceover artists every step of the way from "I don’t know" to working pro.
She has been telling stories in all genres of voiceover (commercials, animation, video games, tv narration, promo, audiobooks et al) for 25+ years including being the voice of many high profile and long-running campaigns like Subaru and Citibank.
Tish is a 2020 Stevie Award Winner for Female Entrepreneur of the Year and the Dojo for Company of the Year. She is a graduate of Northwestern University’s Theatre Department where bringing stories to life was instilled as a way of life.
Inspired by the discipline of martial arts and the fun and playfulness of improv, at the V.O. Dojo we encourage voiceover artists to approach their craft fearlessly and with the wisdom of a warrior.
Unlike many other training programs, the Dojo takes a wonderfully unique and holistic approach to the business of voiceover. We concentrate not only on formal skills and techniques but also on the mind/body/spirit connection necessary to communicate your truth and connect with your audience.
